The ground rules.

1. What Paperlock is

Paperlock is an iPhone app that stores your documents in an encrypted vault on your device, reads them, and helps you find them and get answers about them. By using the app or this website, you agree to these terms.

2. Your documents are yours

You keep all rights to every document you put in Paperlock. You give us only the narrow permission we need to operate the app: processing your documents, at your request, to read them and answer your questions. We claim no ownership, ever.

3. Your responsibilities

• Only store documents you have the right to keep.
• Don’t use Paperlock for anything illegal, or to violate someone else’s privacy.
• Keep your phone’s passcode and Face ID to yourself — the vault is only as safe as the phone it lives on.
• Keep a backup of truly irreplaceable originals. Paperlock stores copies on your device and, if you turn on iCloud sync, in your personal iCloud. If you lose your phone without sync or an iPhone backup, we cannot recover your vault (we never had it).

4. Subscriptions

Paperlock is free to try, with limits on the number of documents and questions. Paperlock Plus removes those limits and costs $4.99/month or $39.99/year, with a 7-day free trial on the annual plan. Prices may vary by region and may change; changes never apply retroactively to time you’ve already paid for.

Billing, renewal, cancellation, and refunds are handled by Apple through your App Store account. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can cancel anytime in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.

5. Answers are helpful, not gospel

Paperlock reads documents and answers questions remarkably well, but no reading is perfect. A date, amount, or detail may occasionally be read wrong — that’s why every answer shows you the source document. For anything important (legal, medical, tax, immigration), check the original document, which is always one tap away.

6. What we promise, and what we can’t

We work hard to keep Paperlock fast, accurate, and available, but the app is provided “as is.” To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement, and our total liability to you is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before a claim arose.

Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

7. Fair use of the service

The reading and question-answering features run on our servers and are metered per installation to keep the service fast for everyone. Don’t attempt to abuse, overload, reverse-engineer the service, or use it to build a competing dataset. We may suspend service to an installation that does.

8. License

We grant you a personal, non-transferable license to use Paperlock on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as permitted by the App Store’s usage rules. The app is licensed to you, not sold, and these terms are an agreement between you and us — not with Apple.

9. The Apple part

Because Paperlock is distributed through the App Store, Apple requires us to say the following — all of it standard:

• Apple isn’t a party to these terms and isn’t responsible for the app or its content. We are.
• Maintenance and support are our responsibility, not Apple’s. Apple has no obligation to provide any support for Paperlock.
• Warranty: if the app fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price you paid (if any). To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Paperlock; anything beyond that is between you and us.
• Claims: we, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app — including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, consumer protection, and claims that the app infringes someone’s intellectual property.
• Legal compliance: you confirm you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo or designated as “terrorist supporting,” and you are not on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
• Third-party terms: you agree to comply with any applicable third-party terms when using the app (for example, your wireless carrier’s data agreement).
• Third-party beneficiary: Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and upon your acceptance, Apple has the right to enforce them against you.

10. Ending things

You can stop using Paperlock anytime — deleting the app deletes your vault from your device. We may discontinue the service with reasonable notice; because your documents live on your phone, you'd keep access to them and could export them regardless.

11. Changes to these terms

If we update these terms, we’ll change the date at the top of this page and, for significant changes, say so plainly in the app.
