Safety & privacy

Is Paperlock safe for things like my passport and ID?

Yes — that’s exactly what it’s built for. Documents are encrypted on your phone, the app locks with Face ID, and sensitive papers stay blurred in your library until you confirm it’s you. And we never see your documents.

Can anyone at Paperlock see my documents?

No. Your documents live encrypted on your phone. When Paperlock reads a document, it’s processed by our servers just long enough to understand it, over an encrypted connection — then it’s gone. We don’t store your documents, we can’t browse them, and we never use them for training or advertising. That’s in our privacy policy, in writing.

What if someone takes my phone?

The vault locks with Face ID or your passcode every time the app opens, and again if it’s been in the background for more than a minute. Even the app switcher preview is covered, so your documents aren’t visible in a glance over your shoulder.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There are no accounts, no passwords, and no sign-up emails. There’s no profile of you on our servers, because there are no user accounts at all.

Will Paperlock delete or change my photos?

Never. Paperlock only reads your photo library, and only with your permission. When you import documents, it makes copies into the vault — your original photos stay exactly where they were.

Using Paperlock

How is this different from a scanner app?

Scanner apps store pictures of your papers — and then you’re on your own to name them, file them, and find them again. Paperlock actually reads each document: what it is, who it’s from, the dates and amounts on it. So instead of scrolling through scans, you just ask: “when does my passport expire?” and get the answer.

Do I have to organize things into folders?

No folders, ever. Paperlock files everything automatically by what it is and when it happened. Finding something is a question, not a scavenger hunt.

Does it read handwriting?

Yes — handwritten notes, receipts with scribbles, the works. Very messy handwriting is harder (for us humans too), but Paperlock does remarkably well.

Does it work offline?

Your documents are always available offline — they live on your phone. Basic keyword search works offline too. The smarter question-answering needs an internet connection, and the app will let you know gently when that’s the case.

What kinds of documents does it understand?

Receipts, invoices, IDs and passports, insurance, leases and contracts, medical records, tax papers, vehicle documents, utility bills, bank statements, letters, warranties and manuals, tickets and travel documents, school papers, handwritten notes — and if something doesn’t fit a category, it’s still saved, readable, and searchable.

Can I get a document back out of Paperlock?

Of course — they’re your papers. Any document can be shared or exported as a PDF whenever you like: email it to your accountant, send it to your landlord, print it.

What if I lose my phone or get a new one?

Turn on iCloud sync (a Plus feature) and your vault follows you: an encrypted copy lives in your personal iCloud, under your own Apple ID, and appears on your new iPhone automatically. It never touches our servers — sync is between your devices and your iCloud, and it's entirely optional. Without sync, your vault lives only on your phone, so a standard iPhone backup is your safety net.

How do the expiry reminders work?

When Paperlock notices an expiry date on a document — passport, ID, insurance, warranty — it quietly schedules reminders for 30 days and 7 days before. You don’t set anything up.

Pricing & availability

How much does it cost?

Free to try: keep 25 documents in your vault and ask 10 questions, with no time limit and no credit card. Paperlock Plus is $4.99/month or $39.99/year (about $3.33/month), with a 7-day free trial on the annual plan. Plus gets you unlimited documents, unlimited questions, iCloud sync, and full camera-roll import.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are handled entirely by Apple, so cancelling works the same as any App Store subscription: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. No emails to send, no retention questionnaires, no hard feelings.

When is Paperlock coming out?

It’s in development now and coming soon to the App Store. This site will have the download link the day it launches.

Is there an Android or web version?

Paperlock is iPhone-only for now. We’d rather make one version excellent than three versions mediocre. Android and other platforms may come later.

Does it work on iPad?

It runs on iPad in compatibility mode, but it’s designed for iPhone — the phone you have with you when someone hands you a piece of paper.
